The City of Bécancour is located in the Saint-Laurent plain, in the Centre-du-Québec region, at the crossroads of major communication routes. The first city-merger in Quebec was officially created on October 17, 1965.
By bringing together eleven municipal corporations spread over a territory of 434 km2, the city of Bécancour becomes that day, the largest city in Quebec from the point of view of surface area. Today, the six sectors that make up the urban agglomeration bear witness, each in their own way, to the history of a region whose economic vocation has rapidly changed from agriculture to heavy industry.
The six sectors are: Bécancour, Gentilly, Précieux-Sang, Sainte-Angèle-de-Laval, Sainte-Gertrude and Saint-Grégoire. In 1968, the creation of an industrial park was proposed. It will take some time for this new project to revive hope. The 1970s and 1980s finally saw large companies settle in the park in order to take advantage of the many strategic, geographical, energy and economic advantages. Today, for the past twenty-five years, its imposing industrial and port park has made the municipality known internationally and the economic benefits can be seen in all areas: residential and commercial development, road network and, same, cultural, sports and community life.
Agriculture is also an important sector of activity in Bécancour. The prosperous farms, the variety of crops and the different productions testify to the richness of the agricultural territory.
